On the 23rd of January, the O2 Institute will host The Hunna on their 100 album headline tour – with support from Brighton based, High Tyde. This is The Hunna‘s eighth date of an 11 date UK tour, starting in Edinburgh and ending in London.Birmingham Preview

Doors will be opening a 19:00 with a 23:00 curfew. A ticket for this show is £15.50 + booking fees – as presented by Kilimanjaro Live. For direct gig info, including venue details and online ticket sales, click here.

As a lover of live music I’m often scrolling through local events and taking a look at who’s on, doing a bit of digging into bands I’ve heard a bit about and generally browsing. It can feel like a rare thing, these days, to come across a group that has the ‘Rock Band’ look and feel… then there’s The Hunna.

The Hunna (sort of) started some time ago with Dan and Jermaine learning to play guitar together. But (officially) it was in 2015 where the addition of Ryan, a college friend, and Jack meant the guys finally had a four piece Rock outfit.

They wasted little time in getting their singles out there, with ‘Bonfire’ coming out in October 2015 and ‘We Could Be’ in early 2016. This was followed by sets at the Reading/Leeds and Dot-to-Dot Festivals, alongside a BBC Introducing set. Although by then they needed little 100 / The Hunnaintroducing to some. The Hunna rounded off summer by releasing their debut album, 100, in August 2016.

A colloquialism of ‘hundred’, The Hunna say their name ‘reflects giving 100% and being true to ourselves, which we like to think we do in our music’ and their actions so far seem to support it. Fresh off a support tour with Jimmy Eat World, they’re already back on the road touring their 16-track debut.

Plus they look like an old school Rock band, they’ve put an album out five tracks longer than most, and have come straight off a major support tour onto a headline tour of their own, even taking their own support band, High Tyde, with them. On January 23rd Birmingham will get to see exactly what that 100% attitude brings to the O2 Institute stage.

On Thursday 22nd December, Dorcha performed at the Hare & Hounds with Chartreuse + Delta Autumn as support.

Headlining the This Is Tmrw Christmas shindig, Dorcha were also releasing their new ISM EP – with hard press copies available for the first time. Dorcha had previously released a limited digital run at their Centrala party in mid November.

Lurking head and shoulders above the rest, if such as thing is logistically possible, was Jay Dyer – taking notes for a BREVIEW in between the occasional Winterval Shandy. To, be, continued after Christmas.

But to get something out before THE BIG DAY, and to save you too much of that troublesome reading lark, here’s some pics of all the acts on the Xmas bill from Rob Hadley. For the Full Flicker of Pics, click here or on featured links.

Now go wrap some pressies; Back to the Future’s on soon.

Happy holidays all x

On Thursday 22nd December, Dorcha perform at the Hare & Hounds (Kings Heath) with Chartreuse + Delta Autumn as support.

Doors open at 7:30pm. Tickets are priced at £7 (advance) and £10 (otd) with ‘all proceeds from this show will now go towards helping those affected by the Aleppo crisis.’ For direct gig info and online tickets sales, click here.Birmingham Preview

This Is Tmrw will be also throwing some DJs into the Christmas pudding, as it’s their party and they’ll play if they want to, with a ‘Special Guest’ also curiously billed to appear… Could it be Father Christmas?

No. He doesn’t exist. And how scary is a fat cosplayer, drunk on Sherry, creeping into your children’s bedroom at three in the morning..? Someone get Paul Dacre on the phone.

The obligatory Santa/Sexual Predator jokes aside; this looks like a good celebration whatever your appropriated religious predilection. Dorcha have (kind sorta) released a new EP recently, ISM, making some limited edition copies available at their Centrala party in mid November.

Being (INSERT PLAYFUL SELF DEPRECIATION) we never made it to Minerva Works and have been quietly self harming ever since. But now, dear hearts, bring out the short sleeves ‘cos Dorcha will be selling CDs at the Hare. It’s like Christmas.

Supporting Dorcha are the ever wonderful and sublime, Chartreuse. Named after mountains, monks or some really poky liquor, this Birmingham four piece are but wee nippers in the broader scheme of things – but bugger me with a salad tosser, they’re already amongst the cream of Birmingham crop. Like a chunk of 4D fell into Lou Reed’s overnight bag, got covered in Absinthe and glitter, before being sprinkled around Bobby Gillespie’s hotel room at 6am… It’s fair to say we like them. But see what you think – we rely too much on metaphors anyway.

Also supporting are Delta Autumn. Honestly, we don’t know much about this band. Except that it wasn’t always a band. But self described as ‘smashing hip hop, glitch, pop, rock, jazz and electro acoustic compositional techniques together to create a sound that sits somewhere between James Blake, Flying Lotus and Thundercat’ they sound worth a stop, look, listen. And This Is Tmrw are not often wrong.

But if you want a sneaky peak there’s a few tracks on Delta Autumn’s website for you to scroll through, including the oddly frenetic ‘Citrus Quotes’ with Juice Aleem – always a good name to see on a track listing.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch…

On Sunday 4th December, Primal Scream perform at the O2 Institute. Just let that sink in…

Doors open at 7pm with an 11pm curfew. Tickets are priced at £30.25 (+booking fee) as presented by SJM Concerts. For direct gig info and online ticket sales, click here.Birmingham Preview

With arguably the best name and most fractured career path of any 90’s Indie band, Primal Scream are a corner stone of modern rock. Alongside other Madchester contemporaries, this shoegaze-bluesy-rock-dance-hybrid from Glasgow would become synonymous (and still are) with the crest of the UK Indie scene.

Swinging and missing until the release of Screamadelica in 1991, their second album on another important Indie foundation block – Creation Records, it was the meeting of musical minds from rock and dance that would establish Primal Scream on a serious level. Introduced to Alex Patterson, Thomas Fehlamann, Jimmy Miller and Andrew Weatherall, the cross genre production team took Primal Scream into uncharted territory – fusing their raw rock edge and flower power indulgence with pristine dance euphoria. Brave, bold, and fuck me it worked.

Lead single, ‘Loaded’, charted at No16 in the UK Singles Chart – whilst subsequent singles, ‘Come Together’, ‘Higher than the Sun’ and ‘Movin on Up’ have outlived their peers like a reinforced cockroach with an assault rifle. Screamadelica would also be the winner of the inaugural Mercury Music Award in 1992 – beating Young Disciples, chaosmosisJesus and the Mary Chain, U2, and (mercifully) Simply Red.

Over the next 15 years, Primal Scream would go on to release a further eight studio albums, giving them a more expansive portfolio than their recorded/released peers with an LP grand total of 11. Alongside extensive touring on both sides of the pond and beyond, the boys (and occasional girl – Simone Butler has been in the lineup since Mani’s departure) stayed busy.

Plus the hop scotching of genres and approaches would piss of the fad following music press off no end, encouraging almost schizophrenic commentary from the NME – including a colourful one line summary of the 1994 Give Out But Don’t Give Up. ‘This record was about as innovative as shitting in a ditch.’ Nice.

Primal Scream are now back on the road with studio album No 11, Chaosmosis – released to the world via the band’s own imprint, First International (via Ignition Records), in March this year. Check out the latest single from Chaosmosis below.

On Friday 30th September, Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Parasio came to Birmingham, shifting their previously Rainbow booked gig to the Flapper & Firkin.

Possibly due to ticket sales, possibly due to logistics, possibly due to the tech spec (including a harp and a Theremin) or possibly due to ‘playing at the rainbow’ being just too obvious, but Kawabata Makoto’s ‘soul collective’ took over the canal side city centre venue – playing in Birmingham as part of their 40 date Wake to a New Dawn of Another Astro Era Tour across Europe. A tour which previously took them to the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia… what could possibly go wrong (we’re going next year).

In support were local lucid dreaming luminaries, The Mothers Earth Experiment – a six piece psychedelic ensemble who have been enjoying a fairly festivaltastic summer of love this year. Rob Hadley, who has been professionally stalking The Mothers Earth Experiment since Lunar Festival, was there to catch the whole kaleidoscope of psychedelic/prog rock glory for THE GALLERY.

Bend your corneas round some samples below, or for the full Flickr of pics click here.

Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Parasio UFO @ Flapper & Firkin 30.09.16

Acid Mother’s Temple formed in 1995, soon dropping the apostrophe and breeding more splinter bands than Motown in the 80’s (my personal favourite being Acid Mothers Temple & the Incredible Strange Band). But founding father and guitarist Kamabata Makoto says, ‘the future may see yet other groups bearing similar names. But each and all of them will be true manifestations of Acid Mothers Temple’ – as all roads lead to Strawberry Fields, with a six string Spiritualized approach being at the core of each incarnation.

The Mothers Earth Experiment – supporting Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Parasio UFO @ Flapper & Firkin 30.09.16

The Mothers Earth Experiment are of a similar ilk but with (arguably) a touch more musical flair – layering and leads allowed, as opposed to the strict rabbit hole cacophony of their Japanese compatriots. Don’t Speak Against the Sun, The Mothers Earth Experiment’s debut EP – released in September 2015 – is a solid four track introduction to the band, with everything from jazz drum rolls to a piano instrumental (the glorious ‘Ether’).
