Possibly the hardest working unsigned artist in Birmingham, Call Me Unique (or Unique for short) has been building audiences through her soulful productions, crafted lyrics and Jazz scat-singing. Her debut Urban Gypsy EP is one of the more exciting things to have come out of this city’s music scene, whilst the acoustic troubadour remains never too far away from a stage.

Established songs in her portfolio, such as The Wife and Sholow, have ingrained themselves as independent classics –  whilst her co-productions with Professor F have churned out some significantly exciting new material.

Birmingham Review last saw Unique perform just over a year ago, watching her showcase her Urban Gypsy EP at the now sadly departed Yardbird. Read Ed King’s Birmingham Review of the Urban Gypsy EP launch gig click here and of Urban Gypsy EP itself click here.

Sun at the Station - Unique flyerBut a lot can happen in 12 months, or even just over, so tonight’s The Sun at the Station gig might have a few surprises as well as familiar sounds and faces.

Unique is an artist perpetually on the cusp, creatively excelling every she year stays in the game – whilst accruing further support from the audience and industry that so deservedly endorse her. And with European tours now on her annual calendar, alongside a host of NEC support and dangerously exciting attention, it seems there is a lot more to come from the genuinely unique artist; a fitting moniker indeed.

Plus it’s good to see another venue in Kings Heath start to programme local artists and support the suburb’s growing independent entertainments scene. All in all, and for many reasons, tonight’s definitely worth a fiver to get in. I hear they sell beer too.

Call Me Unique performs tonight (Fri 27th) at The Sun at the Station in Kings Heath, joined by special guests Tina Amana, Ed Geater & Hannah Brown. Ed King will be there for a Birmingham Review.
