Batsheva Ensemble, the ‘younger wing’ of the Tel Aviv based Batsheva Dance Company, will be coming to the Birmingham Hippodrome on November 13th and 14th.
Batsheva Ensemble will be performing Deca Dance – a composite of work from Batsheva Artistic Director, Ohad Naharin.
Priding themselves for ‘fearless, full-bodied, movingly honest performances’, Batsheva Dance Company have established a reputation of extensive touring; reportedly delivering 250 performances across the globe each year.
Batsheva Ensemble also conducts open rehearsals and repertory workshops, alongside continued outreach activities and performances for communities across Israel.
Batsheva Ensemble is made up of handpicked dancers aged between 18 – 24, many of whom hone their craft in the Ensemble before joining the adult Company. All selected by Naharin, members of Batsheva Ensemble come from all over the world; including graduates of dance institutions such as Julliard and the Paris Conservatory.
Assuming the role of Artistic Director in 1990, Ohad Naharin has been a member of Batsheva since 1974.
Having studied at the School of America Ballet and Julliard, Naharin is known for his contemporary choreography – culminating in his creation of a new ‘movement language’, Gaga.
Deca Dance is a celebration of Naharin’s portfolio from the past 20 years, set to a broad spectrum of music from classical composers such as Vivaldi to contemporaries such as The Beach Boys and Missy Elliot – with text inspired by Charles Brokowski.
Batsheva Ensemble have been recently touring Deca Dance across Europe; including their first ever performances in Britain.
Members of Batsheva will also be taking part in a free Q&A after each performance.
